What Is NBI Clearance?

An NBI Clearance is commonly needed for different purposes in the Philippines. You may need one when applying for a new job, getting a visa, working abroad, applying for certain government services, or completing other official transactions.

The clearance shows the result of a background check against records held by the National Bureau of Investigation. If your name gets a “HIT,” the NBI may need to verify your information before releasing the clearance. This does not always mean that you have a criminal record, as another person may have a similar name.

If you’re planning to apply for one, here’s what you need to know about the requirements, fees, appointment, and renewal process.

NBI Clearance vs Police Clearance

Both documents are used for background checks, but they are issued by different authorities. The National Bureau of Investigation issues the certificate and checks records at the national level. A Police Clearance is issued by a local police office and is mainly used for records within its area.

What document is required depends on the purpose. For example, an employer, government agency, or other organization may specifically ask for the certificate, while a local office may require a Police Clearance.

If you are not sure which one you need, check the requirements of the office or organization requesting it.
